Spotlight on Alan Brock

Gael Campbell Young, Alan Brock and Alan Bascombe in Deadly Relations

THIS MONTH our superstar is Alan Brock, an on stage and off stage Wanneroo Repertory member for sixteen years……

Alan was first introduced to the stage at the age of 11 when he won a talent competition, doing impressions. He was then reluctantly dragged around the Working Men’s Clubs of London in a comedy act with his father. Since then he has been a member of several UK societies and says he has, “performed in more shows than I care to remember!”

Alan became a member of the Limelight Theatre in 2001 and has enjoyed playing an assortment of characters in some memorable shows. He cites his most rewarding character role as Mr Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.

After 69 years of being in and around theatre, and at the tender age of 80, he claims to have suffered a senior moment early last year when deciding to direct the musical ‘Blitz’. Although somewhat exhausting, he found that he really enjoyed working with such a great cast and supporting team and believed he delivered an enjoyable show.

“It has always been my philosophy that you get back what you put in” and with this in mind he has helped front of house for every show that he was able to throughout his membership. He tended the front garden of the theatre and was an active member of the Wednesday (later change to the Tuesday) Maintenance Club until a broken leg forced him to retire. Alan believes his reward has been meeting and working alongside like-minded members and forming some wonderful friendships.

Sadly Alan and partner Ros Guye will shortly moving to the East Coast to be near family. He will be greatly missed at the Limelight Theatre and by the many friends he has made. Alan too wishes everyone all the best and urges us to “keep those wonderful shows coming”.

Before he leaves Alan would like to share a little story he learned many years ago…

Once upon a time there were four members called, Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it and Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done….

President’s Spot

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all saw “It Runs in the Family” – what a delightful romp! Although farce is not usually my thing, I thoroughly enjoyed this production on the final night with a very appreciative audience. The energy and fun that the members on stage were emitting was infectious and engaging. Thank you all for a wonderful night’s entertainment!

So now, for something completely different, we gear up for our next production – “Greenwicks!” a musical set in a supermarket! Bookings will open very soon, so don’t delay getting your tickets.
Hot on the heels of “Greenwicks!” will be Mater Dei’s production of “Grease”. This is our first joint venture with Mater Dei College and I hope it will not be our last. The young people that these productions bring into our theatre are the future of Wanneroo Repertory, so please support both of these musical presentations.
The first meeting of our new committee in April was a lively one with each member showing their commitment to the future smooth running of our wonderful Limelight Theatre; we are fortunate indeed to have this excellent facility. However, even though we have already made this commitment, the theatre is only as strong as its membership and I hope that when asked, other members will step in and volunteer for the many jobs in our organisation.

All the best

Spotlight on Ros Guye

Each month this year we are aiming to shine the spotlight on a Wanneroo Repertory member who deserves a big shout out for their hard work and dedication to our club.

Our first behind the scenes star is Ros Guye, our Treasurer who is also often found stage right, stage managing a show!

Originally from the UK Ros joined Godalming Theatre Group twenty five years ago. When Ros and partner Alan Brock came to Australia in 2001they immediately put their feelers out for more boards to tread on and found the Limelight Theatre. A friend mentioned this great theatre so they decided to come along and see what it was all about. The rest is history!

Ros was first “roped in” to play in the chorus for High Society but thereafter found her niche back stage working with Margaret Gardener. She enjoyed Stage Managing for many plays and musicals especially Phantom of the Opera (2013) and Blitz! The Musical (2016) finding both very challenging with intricate sets and many changes. ‘The secret’, Ros says, ‘is to have a great backstage crew and I fortunately have had some of the best.’

Ros’ many years experience as a dealership accountant in London has come in handy when she was asked to take on the role of club

Treasurer in early 2016 due to the departure of Bob Mainwaring. Ros has enjoyed her time as Treasurer, where amongst other things she has helped successfully set up the new ticketing system.

Ros and Alan will be leaving Western Australia (and Wanneroo Rep) for Melbourne and the Gold Coast to join their family. They hope to find a theatre to join on the Gold Coast. Although they have their eye on a couple of clubs, they have yet to see whether they meet their high standards!

We wish Ros and Alan all the best for their big move and hope they find another theatre family soon. Their passion, dedication and good humour will be sorely missed at the Limelight Theatre.

President’s Spot

Hi Everyone,

I am delighted to now be the President of Wanneroo Repertory at the Limelight Theatre and I thank not only those who voted me into this position, but to all of you who came along to the Annual General Meeting – we have never had so many members interested in an AGM! We also have several new members on the committee who will, I am sure, inject some new blood and new ideas into the running of the theatre. We are all still working out exactly what our roles are and will be, and with the constitution about to change, we will need to be flexible in our approach to the management of the Group.

This is the first year that we are trialling a different performance schedule with 8 performances over 2 weeks instead of our previous 9 performances over 3 weeks. You will have noticed that we have now included a Sunday matinee performance which, for the additional cost of $5, will provide you with afternoon tea after the curtain comes down! The reason for this change was to open up the calendar to allow other events and performances both in the theatre and in the foyer. We have already had a performance by students from Wanneroo Secondary College, we had the Folkin’ Bogans last month and we will have a “Songs from the Shows” karaoke in July plus a northern suburbs children’s choir will perform later in the year. We wanted to invite the community into our theatre and realised that the theatre foyer was being under-utilised, and we are looking for other events, acts or performers, particularly on Saturday nights when the theatre is not in use.

So, if you have any ideas about how our theatre should be run, what you would like to see on the stage or in the foyer, please contact me or any of the committee who will be happy to listen to your ideas for the future of the Limelight Theatre.

Hope to see you at “It Runs in the Family” – I’ve seen it in rehearsals and it is hilarious!

All the best
