Roles (All ages are flexible but will need to relate to other characters):
ORGON (55+): A wealthy middle-aged head of the household who has a demanding mother, a son and daughter of marriageable age, an attractive second wife, and a smart-mouthed servant. Once an able and wise man, Orgon has succumbed to religious zealotry, using morality to exercise power over his family. Orgon is gullible, stubborn and not very bright.

TARTUFFE (50+): Pronounced Tar-toof A charlatan and hypocrite who preys on Orgon and his family. Tartuffe has faked holy poverty and religious fervour to wheedle his way into Orgon’s admiration and succeeded so well that Tartuffe now lives in luxury in Orgon’s house. Tartuffe keeps up his public image with extreme acts of penance and ostentatious charity. In private, he gorges on food and wine and leers at the women in Orgon’s household.

ELMIRE (45+): Pronounced Elm-eer Orgon’s second wife and the fond stepmother of Orgon’s son Damis, and daughter, Mariane. Elmire is a witty and fashionable lady who wears fine clothing and entertains many friends. She is devoted to her husband and stepchildren. But Elmire is also wise to the ways of society. She recognises the need to avoid scandal and to protect her husband’s family.

DORINE(Any age over 25): The maid to Mariane, Orgon’s daughter. Dorine may be the least important member of Orgon’s household in terms of social class, but she is by far the most realistic, clear-headed and competent. She talks back to her employers and social betters, stating the truth without fear. Dorine is street-wise, sceptical, and often saucy.

CLEANTE (50+) Pronounced Clay-aunt: Elmire’s brother and Orgon’s brother-in-law. Cleante is a frequent visitor at Orgon’s house, enjoying the society of Elmire’s other guests. Cleante is a philosopher and serious thinker, a voice of reason and moderation whose speeches border on the pompous. Cleante dispenses wise thoughts and argues with common sense. He approaches crises with caution and so is given to inaction.

DAMIS (25+) Pronounced Dam-eece: Orgon’s son by his first wife, Elmire’s stepson. Damis is young, hotheaded, and quick tempered. He shows off his bravado with threats of violence, especially against Tartuffe. Damis wants to marry Valere’s sister.

MARIANE (25+): Orgon’s daughter by his first wife, stepdaughter to Elmire. Mariane is innocent, shy, somewhat naive, and deeply in love with Valere, the man to whom Orgon has promised her in marriage. Mariane is also a dutiful daughter, accustomed to obeying Orgon.

VALERE (25+) Pronounced Val-air: A wealthy young man engaged to Mariane, Orgon’s daughter. Valere is an emotional adolescent who is deeply in love. He is quick to take offense and creates unnecessary obstacles between himself and Mariane. Valere is also the friend of Damis.

MADAME PERNELLE (70’s): Orgon’s mother and dreaded grandmother of Damis and Mariane. A bit of a tyrant who is totally taken in by Tartuffe.

MONSIEUR LOYAL: Could also double up as the Police Officer

A POLICE OFFICER: Could also double up as Monsieur Loyal. A royal official who serves as both an arresting officer and as the King’s messenger

FLIPOTE: The maid to Madame Pernelle. Flipote does not have a speaking part in the play. Her role is to take abuse from Madame Pernelle.

Synopsis:

A comedy drama that explores a family’s current relationship problems that have resulted from a single decision taken forty-four years earlier. Dee and Millie haven’t spoken since 1969 and no one knows why. That’s how it would have stayed until fate took a hand when Brian and Linda, their respective children, met and married. Now they tolerate each other on social occasions but avoid each other whenever possible. It is the week of their only granddaughter’s wedding and it is physically impossible to dodge the inevitable confrontations. No one knows what happened forty-four years ago and Brian and Linda are fed up with the innuendos, sarcasm and downright awkwardness of the situation. Linda is planning Nicola’s wedding with military precision, much to Brian’s horror when he finds out just what has been planned for the big day. However, the best laid plans can go wrong, and as the wedding plans unravel, so do the lives of the entire family. When next door neighbour Wills starts to delve into what happened in 1969, skeletons tumble out of cupboards at an alarming rate. A spiral of destruction ensues, leaving the family with a past that can only lead to heartbreak, and the resurrection of a day that both Dee and Millie hoped had been buried long ago.

150 Years of Roman History in 30 Minutes

Audition Date: Tuesday 6th December 7pm – 9pm
Location: Limelight Theatre, Civic Drive, Wanneroo
Writer/Director: Zavier Wileman   [email protected]

Synopsis: Three historians, one history – or so you would think. But when it comes to the Ancient Romans, historical accuracy suffers at the hands of propaganda, gossip and rumour. ‘150 Years of Roman History in 30 Minutes’ is a humourous retelling of Ancient Roman political history starting with the reign of Caesar in 46BC and ending with Domitians’s reign up until 96AD. Will the historian’s be able to agree on anything? And most importantly, will they be able to entertain the restless guests of a Roman dinner party with their stories?

Character Requirements: There are 19 characters in total, however with the possibility of double-casting several characters, we will likely work with a cast of 9 actors. Despite most of these characters being male in canonical history, we will take creative liberties (much like the Romans did with their own histories) with the gender of characters. Actors of all ages, gender identity, and experience level are encouraged to audition! The only essentials are a good sense of humour and enthusiasm.

Cast:

Suetonius: An ancient historian who loves gossip and telling (slightly) fictionalised versions of real events

Cassius Dio: An ancient historian who shares Suetonius’ energetic temperament, but with slightly more restraint. Cares deeply about the reputation of historians in the eyes of other Romans. Wants to be admired

Tacitus: An ancient historian who is incredibly matter-of-fact. He is a traditionalist and a conservative who lacks a sense of humour

Man: Unnamed man who is hosting the party. A wealthy patricician who wants his party to go well

Caesar: The first emperor of Rome. Incredibly cocky and selfish (which resulted in his assassination)

Octavian: The second emperor of Rome. One of Rome’s most successful and peaceful rulers.

Tiberius: The third emperor of Rome. A competent emperor, but is mostly just a normal guy who is not really known for doing anything.

Caligula: The fourth emperor of Rome. Crazy and arrogant ruler who had a close relationship with his horse.

Horse: Caligula’s horse. He is a horse.

Claudius: The fifth emperor of Rome. No scandals and was considered to be a good ruler. Dignified

Nero: The sixth emperor of Rome. Unhinged and psychopathic. Might have single handedly set fire to Rome.

Woman: Unnamed pregnant woman who gives birth in the audience

Galba: The seventh emperor of Rome and the first emperor in the Year of the Four Emperors. Considered to be a weak ruler. Needs basic singing skills.

Otho: The eighth emperor of Rome and the second emperor in the Year of the Four Emperors. Jealous of Galba. Needs basic singing skills.

Vitellius: The ninth emperor of Rome and the third emperor in the Year of the Four Emperors. Lazy and indulgent. Needs basic singing skills.

Vespasian: The tenth emperor of Rome and the fourth emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors. A strong military general. Needs basic singing skills.

Jospehus: An ancient historian who wrote incredibly unhinged recounts of the Jewish War. Goofy and high-energy.

Titus: The eleventh emperor of Rome. Vespasian’s attractive but dim-witted son.

Domitian: The twelfth emperor of Rome. Vespasian’s unpopular son, who is hateful of his brother Titus.
